So… you did the hard part. You got the job offers to work directly with patients.
You got two patient care job offers (or you’re deciding between two options), and now you’re wondering:
“Wait… which one actually helps me get into PA school??”
Because let’s be honest—
this decision feels bigger than just “which job do I want.”
It feels like:
👉 Which one will look better on my PA school application
👉 Which one will get me more PA school interviews
👉 Which one will actually move the needle
And if no one has told you this yet…
Not all PCE is created equal.
Let’s break down exactly how to choose—so you’re not just guessing, but making a strategic decision that strengthens your entire application.
First: The Truth About PCE (That Most Pre-PAs Miss)
Most pre-PAs think:
“As long as I get my hours, I’m good.”
But admissions committees are NOT just looking at:
- ✔️ How many hours you have
- ✔️ Your job title
They’re looking at:
👉 What you actually DID every single day in that role
👉 How involved you were in hands-on *clinical skills* patient care
👉 What clinical skills you developed
👉 How well you can TALK about it in your application and interviews
Translation?
A lower-hour job with strong responsibilities can beat a high-hour job where you barely touch patients.
The 5 Questions You Should Ask Before Choosing
If you’re deciding between two PCE jobs, run both options through this filter 👇
1. Which Job Has More Direct Patient Care?
This is #1 for a reason.
Ask yourself:
- Are you physically interacting with patients?
- Are you involved in their care decisions or processes?
- Are you doing hands-on *clinical* tasks? (Remember, clinical tasks are things like taking vital signs or performing EKGs. *Not activities of daily living (ADLs) like toileting, bathing, feeding, hygiene care – ADLs are considered HCE, NOT PCE.)
Stronger PCE examples:
- Taking vitals
- Assisting with procedures
- Drawing blood
- Rooming patients and gathering medical histories
- Supporting providers directly
Weaker PCE examples:
- Front desk/admin work
- Observing without doing
- Transport without interaction
- Scribing ONLY (in some cases—depends on involvement)
👉 If one job has more direct, hands-on care, that’s your winner.
2. Where Will You Learn the Most (Fast)?
Not all jobs stretch you.
Some will have you doing the same 3 tasks on repeat.
Others?
You’ll be thinking, learning, and growing every shift.
Ask:
- Will I learn new skills regularly?
- Will I be exposed to different and diverse conditions/patients? (Not just the same diagnosis every single patient)
- Will I understand HOW care decisions are made?
👉 Choose the job that makes you say:
“This might be a little uncomfortable… but I’ll grow FAST.”
Because growth = better stories = stronger application.
3. Which Job Gives You Better Experiences to WRITE About?
This is where most people mess up.
They choose a job based on title or convenience…
but forget:
👉 You have to turn this into compelling CASPA experience paragraphs and essays
Ask:
- Will I have meaningful patient interactions?
- Will I have moments that show empathy, teamwork, or problem-solving?
- Will I be able to describe my impact clearly?
- Will I develop a foundation of strong clinical skills I can tell PA schools about?
Because here’s the deal:
“I worked as a CNA” is not impressive by itself.
But…
“I cared for post-op patients, monitored vital signs, performed EKGs, recognized complications early, and communicated changes to the care team…”
That gets attention.
👉 Choose the job that gives you writing and talking material.
4. Where Will You Work Closely With Providers?
Proximity matters.
You want:
- Exposure to PAs (especially)
- Opportunities to ask questions
- Understanding clinical decision-making
Ask:
- Will I work directly with a PA or provider?
- Will I be able to observe their thought process?
- Can I build relationships for strong letters of recommendation?
👉 A job where you’re around providers consistently = HUGE advantage.
5. Which One Positions You Better Overall?
Zoom out for a second.
Think about your entire application, not just this one job.
Ask:
- Does this add something new to my application?
- Does it strengthen a weak area?
- Does it align with my “story” as an applicant?
Example:
If all your experience is in one niche specialty…
👉 adding a different setting where you’re exposed to numerous conditions and patient presentations (like emergency medicine, urgent care, or internal medicine) could make you more well-rounded.
If you lack hands-on care…
👉 prioritize a role that fixes that.
Quick Breakdown: When to Choose Job A vs Job B
Choose Job A if it:
✔️ Has more hands-on patient care
✔️ Pushes you to learn new skills
✔️ Gives you strong patient interaction
✔️ Puts you near providers
Choose Job B if it:
✔️ Fills a gap in your application
✔️ Offers significantly better mentorship
✔️ Gives you more meaningful experiences (even if slower paced)
What DOESN’T Matter as Much as You Think
Let’s clear this up real quick:
🚫 Job title alone – **It’s NOT about your job title. >>> It’s about what you actually do every day in your role that counts.
🚫 “Prestige” of the clinic/hospital
🚫 Slight pay differences
🚫 What your friends are doing
None of those get you accepted.
👉 Your experiences + how you present them = what matters.
The Mistake You Don’t Want to Make
Choosing the job that is:
- Easier
- More convenient
- Less intimidating
…and then realizing months later:
“I don’t have anything strong to write about.”
That’s the worst-case scenario.
The Bottom Line
If you’re stuck between two PCE jobs, choose the one that:
👉 Gives you the most hands-on *clinical* patient care
👉 Forces you to grow and think
👉 Provides real patient interaction and stories
👉 Gets you closer to providers
