The One Thing Every Pre-PA Should Be Doing (But Probably Isn’t)

(Hint: It’s the key to crushing your PA school interviews.)

Let’s talk about something that’s not a shadowing hour, not a new certification, and definitely not a stats boost…

🧠 It’s self-reflection.

Wait—don’t click away just yet. I know “self-reflection” sounds like something your therapist recommends, not your PA mentors. But hear us out:

If you want to actually stand out in a PA school interview, you need more than polished stats.
You need insight. You need clarity. You need to know your story so well that when a committee asks, “Why do you want to be a PA?” you don’t blink, sweat, or launch into some over-rehearsed monologue about “helping people.”

You need to sound like you—but the version of you who is confident, compelling, and ready to be a future PA.

And that starts with one thing:

🪞 Intentional self-reflection.

Why This Matters (Like, A Lot)

Most interview prep focuses on answers—but great interviews come from knowing the why behind those answers.

PA schools aren’t just assessing if you’re smart. They’re trying to figure out:

  • Can you handle hard moments with grace?
  • Are you self-aware enough to grow?
  • Do you know what this career really takes?

The best way to prove that?
By showing them you’ve already done the inner work.

Here’s What You Should Actually Be Doing Right Now

Before you spend another hour memorizing answers to “Tell me about yourself,” try this instead:

1. Journal your story.

Start with this prompt:
“What experience changed the way I see healthcare forever?”

No fluff. Just write it out—messy, real, vulnerable. Then try:
“What’s one mistake I made that taught me how to be a better provider?”
“What have I seen in medicine that made me more sure this path is for me?”

This is the good stuff you’ll pull from in interviews. And guess what? It’s also gold for your personal statement and CASPA paragraphs.

2. Talk it out.

Voice note yourself answering tough interview questions (yep, seriously). Then listen back.

Do you sound like a robot trying to be perfect?
Or a real human with a mission?

Practice isn’t just about polishing—it’s about connecting to your own story so you can actually connect to your interviewers.

3. Find your themes.

Once you’ve journaled and voice-noted, look for patterns.

Did you notice you always bring up teamwork?
Or a love for underserved communities?
Or your resilience after life knocked you down?

These themes are your interview magic. Weave them into your answers again and again.

Final Thoughts: This Is What Sets You Apart

PA schools interview hundreds of applicants. A lot of them have similar stats. A lot of them want to help people.

But not all of them know who they are, what they bring to the profession, and why their journey matters.

You?
You will—because you took the time to reflect, not just rehearse.

And that’s the kind of future PA who gets the acceptance offer.
