You’re eyeing that coveted spot in Physician Assistant (PA) school, and you’re ready to dive headfirst into the admissions journey. But you might be wondering, “What does it take to be competitive and stand out?”
Here’s the deal: PA school admissions is super diverse, and each program has its own unique flavor. While there’s no one-size-fits-all recipe, we’re here to dish out some benchmarks that can help guide your journey. Keep in mind that these benchmarks aren’t carved in stone; they’re more like a reference point to aim for. You can absolutely get accepted to PA school without hitting all of these benchmarks…especially if you apply to PA school like we show you!
PA schools look at the whole package, not just one aspect. So, while these benchmarks matter, they’re not the only ingredients in your recipe for success.
1. Patient Care Experience (PCE) or Healthcare Experience (HCE) Hours
PA schools adore candidates with hands-on experience. Aim for around 1,000 to 2,000 hours of PCE or HCE. This might include roles as a patient care technician, medical assistant, EMT, paramedic, scribe, or certified nursing assistant (CNA). The more, the merrier!
Note: some schools do only accept PCE hours as a prerequisite, which means they only count positions that have direct, hands-on-patients *clinical* skills, such as a medical assistant that takes vitals, fingerstick glucose, phlebotomy, etc. A scribe would be considered HCE because this position is in a clinical setting, but you typically don’t have direct, hands-on-patients clinical duties.
2. Volunteering
Lend a helping hand to your community. Aim for 100 to 200 hours of volunteering. This shows your commitment to serving others and your passion for healthcare.
Note: Volunteering doesn’t have to only be healthcare related…all volunteering counts and should be included in your CASPA. It’s about demonstrating your dedication to serving others.
3. GPA (Grade Point Average)
Let’s talk academics. A competitive GPA typically hovers around 3.5 to 3.7 or higher. But remember, it’s not just about the numbers. Highlight your growth and determination in your application.
Note: You can absolutely get accepted to PA school with a low GPA. We have accepted many applicants with 2.75-2.8 GPAs. It’s all about applying the right way and to the right schools.
4. GRE Scores
Some programs require GRE scores, and a competitive goal is a combined score of 305 or higher, and a 4.0 or higher on the analytical writing. Always check the specific requirements of your chosen schools.
Note: Standardized testing not your thing? Cool. Apply to schools that don’t require it!
5. PA Shadowing Hours
Get up close and personal with PAs. Aim for around 100 to 200 hours of PA shadowing to gain insights into the profession and show your commitment.
Note: Don’t discount virtual PA shadowing to help you hit this mark. The vast majority of programs accept and appreciate this because it is really hard for many pre-PAs to find PA shadowing opportunities. The other benefits include being able to hear multiple PA’s perspectives in lots of different specialties you may not otherwise have ever had the chance to shadow in. We offer weekly PA shadowing hours in addition to hours of replays (all of which you can put on your CASPA app) in tons of different specialties in our PA-Cers group.
Remember, these benchmarks aren’t a checklist for guaranteed admission. Think of them as guideposts on your journey. Different programs have different priorities, so research each school’s prerequisites and tailor your efforts accordingly.
Your unique story, passion, and dedication matter just as much as these benchmarks. Keep your eyes on the prize, put in the hard work, and let your journey to PA school be a testament to your unwavering commitment.
