So your GPA isn’t exactly giving 4.0 energy…
And now you’re staring down the post-bacc and Master’s rabbit hole on Google, wondering if that’s what it’s going to take to finally get into PA school.
Let’s talk about it.
If you’ve ever asked:
- “Should I do a post-bacc to boost my GPA?”
- “Would a science based Master’s help my app stand out?”
- “Is this going to be worth the time, money, and stress?”
You are NOT alone.
Let’s break it all down so you can make the smartest move for your journey—without wasting time or sinking thousands into the wrong path.
First Things First: What Even Is a Post-Bacc or Science Based Master’s?
Post-bacc programs are usually designed for students who need to boost their GPA or finish prerequisites. They’re not usually degree-granting, but can help you show academic improvement.
Master’s such as in Medical Science (MMS or MSMS) programs are graduate-level degrees. They’re usually heavy in upper-level science courses (think anatomy, physiology, biochem—again), and some are specifically created as “PA or med school prep.”
Sounds fancy. But let’s talk real talk…
When a Post-Bacc or Master’s Might Be Worth It
If you’re in one of these camps, it might make sense to go this route:
✅ You have a very low GPA (cGPA or sGPA < 3.0)
PA schools often have hard cutoffs. If you’re below a 3.0, a strong post-bacc or master’s program might help you meet minimums and show upward trends.
✅ You’ve retaken prereqs but your GPA still isn’t budging
If you’ve repeated a bunch of classes but your CASPA-calculated GPA is still low, a post-bacc can add credit hours and weight to help nudge your average up.
✅ You want to prove academic readiness
Some post-baccs and MMS programs are rigorous. Doing well can show you’re ready for PA school-level coursework—especially if you struggled earlier in college.
✅ You’ve taken too few science courses recently
PA programs love to see recent science success. If it’s been years since you took a hard science class, this can bring your academic timeline up to date.
When It’s Probably Not the Right Move
Here’s when you might want to skip the extra degree:
❌ You already meet the GPA minimums
If your stats are decent (say, 3.2+ cGPA and 3.3+ sGPA), and you’ve got strong PCE and a killer essay, this might be overkill. Instead, use that time to get more PCE, shadowing, or leadership.
❌ You’re doing it just to “look impressive”
Admissions committees don’t hand out gold stars for collecting degrees. If your GPA is solid and your app is strong elsewhere, another degree isn’t going to magically get you accepted.
❌ You’re choosing a program with no grade impact
Some programs are pass/fail, or don’t get factored into your CASPA GPA. (Yes, really.) That means it won’t help raise your GPA—so you’d be spending $$$ without moving the needle.
❌ You’re taking on massive debt
Unless you absolutely need it to qualify for PA school, don’t go into deep debt for an academic enhancer. There are other ways to strengthen your app for way less money.
❌ You aren’t sure you can make straight As
If you need to go this route to improve your GPAs, you MUST make straight As – no exception – otherwise it can hurt or do nothing for your GPA.
Other (Less Expensive) Ways to Strengthen Your App
If you’re on the fence about spending 1–2 years (and $20–60k) on an academic enhancer, consider this first:
✨ Retake key science classes at a community college (cheaper, GPA impact)
✨ Add upper-level sciences (genetics, pathophys, immuno) to prove you can handle rigor
✨ Focus on everything else in your app: stellar PCE, leadership, shadowing, volunteering, and standout essays
✨ Get help with your CASPA application to make every word count
Still Not Sure? Ask Yourself These Questions:
- What are the real reasons I’m considering this?
- Will this help me meet a specific requirement (like a GPA cutoff)?
- Will this impact my CASPA GPA?
- Do I have other areas of my app that are weaker than academics?
- Am I using this as a “backup plan” or procrastination tactic?
Sometimes a post-bacc or MMS is the best move. But sometimes—it’s just a distraction from what your app really needs.
