Do PA Schools Care If You Took Classes Online or at Community College?

Posted on August 7, 2025Comments Off on Do PA Schools Care If You Took Classes Online or at Community College?

Let’s talk about one of the most stress-inducing topics we hear from pre-PAs every week:

“Will PA schools look down on my online classes or community college credits?”

“Is my application doomed if I didn’t take all my prereqs at a university?”

“Should I retake this class at a 4-year school just to be safe?”

If you’ve ever asked one of those questions while nervously staring at your transcripts… you’re not alone. And today, we’re breaking it all down—so you can stop second-guessing your every move and start strategically choosing the right schools for you.

Let’s go 👇

So… do PA schools “look down” on online or community college classes?

The truth? Some do. Some don’t.
(Annoying answer, I know—but stay with us.)

Here’s the deal:

Every PA school sets its own policies about coursework. Some are fine with online and community college credits. Others prefer upper-division university science courses or in-person labs. And a few programs flat-out require certain specifications – such as in-person courses only.

And unfortunately, sometimes that nuance isn’t spelled out clearly on their website. 😅

But here’s what is clear:
Your job is not to twist your entire life and schedule around every school’s preferences.
It’s to find the programs that already align with your unique path—where your hard work will be valued and your stats stand a real chance.

What matters most when it comes to how your classes are viewed?

Let’s break it down:

Accreditation matters more than where you took it.

Your course must be from an accredited institution—whether that’s a 4-year university or your local community college.

The content and grade matter most.

If you earned an A in Microbiology at a regionally accredited community college? That’s going to look a lot better than a C at a university.

School-specific preferences trump everything.

Some PA schools won’t accept online labs. Some don’t care at all. Some want upper-level sciences from a university. Others accept community college A&P just fine.

This is why researching each program strategically is so important.

When might it be smart to take (or retake) a class at a 4-year university?

Let’s say…

  • You already have a few C’s in science courses and want to prove academic readiness
  • You’re applying to highly competitive programs with a clear preference for upper-division coursework
  • You’re trying to boost your GPA and want to show you can handle rigorous science classes

In those cases, retaking a course at a university might help—but only if the rest of your application is strong and that course will truly make an impact.

But if you’re just assuming your community college or online credits will be a red flag? Please don’t spiral.

Because here’s the truth 👇

You do not need a perfect transcript from a 4-year university to get into PA school.

We’ve seen students get accepted with:

  • All their prereqs from community college
  • Online labs and lectures
  • Degrees from non-traditional schools
  • A patchwork of community, university, and online classes

What mattered most?
➡️ They picked schools that fit them.
➡️ They knew which programs aligned with their stats.
➡️ They tailored their applications accordingly.

That’s the secret sauce.

So what should you do next?

If you’re stressing about whether your community college or online classes will hurt you, here’s your game plan:

1. Make a list of your top programs.

Start with schools you’re interested in.

2. Look up their specific prereq policies.

Check if they accept online labs, community college credits, etc. (Some list this on the PAEA directory, but many require digging.)

3. Narrow it down based on your stats + experience.

There are over 300 PA programs. You don’t need to fit all of them. Just find the right ones for you.

And if that sounds overwhelming? We’ve got you.
