(AKA: Why your inbox is quiet and what this actually says about your PA school future)
Let’s talk about the quiet, shall we?
You hit submit on your CASPA.
You triple-checked your transcripts, begged your recommenders to hurry, refreshed the page 37 times after payment went through…
And now?
🦗 Crickets.
Silence.
Not even a courtesy “We received your app!” email from some schools.
And if you’re like most pre-PAs right now, that silence feels personal.
It feels like judgment.
It feels like everyone else is getting interview invites except you.
So before you spiral into the “I’m never getting in” zone, take a deep breath.
Let’s break down what this silent phase actually means — and what you can (and should!) be doing right now.
💡 First: Silence does NOT mean rejection.
If PA schools rejected applicants as quickly as your brain jumps to worst-case scenarios, the process would be a lot easier to navigate.
The truth is:
- PA programs move at dramatically different speeds
- Some don’t send out invites until December, January, or even February
- Some wait until after the holidays to even start reviewing apps
- Many review in batches, not continuously
- And some schools do not send a “we got your application” confirmation at all (rude, but here we are)
Silence = literally nothing except silence.
You are not behind.
You are not forgotten.
You are not out.
You’re just… in the waiting room.
Annoying? YES.
Conclusive? NO.
💡 Second: A slow invite season is normal right now.
Right now in the CASPA cycle, things are weird. Some schools move lightning-fast. Some move like they’re a sloth in quicksand. Some flip through apps slowly because faculty are slammed. Some can’t meet until February. Some interview until March.
So if your friend heard at 9 a.m. and you still haven’t heard anything by 9 p.m.?
Not a sign.
This is especially true during the November through early January months because many schools are busy graduating their students and there’s back-to-back holidays (ie lots of days off).
💡 Third: You can still do things while you wait.
The waiting phase is not the “sit in panic eating trail mix in your car” phase.
It’s strategic.
Here’s what to do to stay competitive:
1. Keep gaining experience (and keep documenting it!)
Patient care hours?
Shadowing?
Volunteering?
Leadership?
All of these can be added to your CASPA if a school allows updates — and they make great talking points in interviews.
Keep the momentum going.
2. Prepare like an interview invite is coming tomorrow
Because it might.
Most interview invites arrive without warning, and sometimes schools only give you days to prepare.
Start practicing now:
✔️ Common questions like “Tell me about yourself,” “Why PA,” and “Why our school?”
✔️ MMI-style scenarios
✔️ Ethical dilemmas
✔️ Talking about weaknesses + failures
✔️ Understanding the program’s mission

3. Consider crafting an update letter (if allowed)
Some schools welcome updates — some don’t.
But when it’s allowed, updating them on:
- New hours
- New responsibilities
- New certifications
- Awards
- Volunteering
- Academic improvements
…keeps you top of mind in a professional, non-annoying way.
4. Revisit your school list (quietly, strategically)
If it’s been weeks (or months) with zero movement, it may be time to run an honest audit:
Did you apply to:
- Schools where you meet or exceed prereqs?
- Programs aligned with your stats (meaning your stats are similar to their accepted cohort’s stats)?
- Mission-fit schools?
- A balanced mix of competitive + attainable programs?
If not… this is the time to plan differently. Add better PA schools for you to your list.
5. Stay connected to healthcare and the PA profession
Whether it’s shadowing, reading, volunteering, or taking on more PCE — staying engaged shows programs (and yourself) that you’re committed.
Not to mention… it gives you something constructive to focus on instead of refreshing your inbox like it owes you money.
💡 Fourth: Here’s what the silence actually means about your application:
Ready?
Here it is:
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Silence is not predictive.
Silence is not coded feedback.
Silence is not rejection.
Silence is simply the absence of information — not the presence of a problem.
PA programs do not review all applications at once.
They do not reject people immediately for small weaknesses.
They do not wait until December to send all invites unless that’s literally how their timeline works.
This part of the cycle always feels stressful because you don’t have control.
But the truth is:
Unless you have received an official “no”, your application is still very much alive.
So what should you not do right now?
Ah yes — the panic mistakes. Please avoid:
❌ Emailing programs every week “just checking in”
❌ Assuming one rejection = your cycle is over
❌ Comparing yourself to your pre-PA friend who already has 4 invites
❌ Thinking you should switch careers because a school didn’t email you today
This is the hardest part of the process — but also the part where most students psych themselves out.
Don’t let that be you.
💬 Final Thoughts: Silence feels scary, but it is NOT the end of your story
If you’re in the quiet phase right now, feeling that knot in your stomach every time you open your inbox… you’re not alone.
Every PA student who has come before you has sat right where you’re sitting:
Unsure.
Hopeful.
Refreshing Gmail way too often.
Wondering if they’re “good enough.”
And you know what?
They made it through.
You will too.
Your application is still in play.
Your invite could literally come tomorrow.
And you are doing far better than your anxious brain is giving you credit for.
Keep going.
Stay ready.
And when that interview comes (because it can — and often does — come out of nowhere), you’ll be prepared.
You’ve got this.
And we’re cheering for you every step of the way.
