You hit submit on CASPA (🎉🎉🎉)…
…and then suddenly remember:
“Oh no. I’m starting a new job next week.”
“I forgot I’m presenting at that conference.”
“I’m planning to retake the GRE.”
Cue panic:
“Can I still update my CASPA? Or is everything locked forever?”
Let’s walk through what you can change, what you can’t, and how to play it smart after you submit.
First: What Actually “Locks” When You Submit CASPA?
Once you hit submit and CASPA verifies your application, certain sections are officially locked.
That means you cannot edit:
- Personal statement
- Experience descriptions & hours already entered
- Activities list / shadowing / volunteering entries you’ve already submitted
- Program-specific questions & essays
- Letters of recommendation requests (you can’t swap writers once it’s submitted to a program)
So if you notice a typo in your personal statement after submission…
Yeah, it’s painful. But it’s done.
The good news? Not everything is set in stone.
What You Can Update After Submitting CASPA
Even after you submit, there are still things you can add or update that PA programs will see.
These typically include:
✅ 1. New Experiences (Jobs, Volunteering, Shadowing)
If you start a new PCE/HCE job, shadowing role, or volunteering position after you submit, you can add new experiences to CASPA.
- Starting a new MA or scribe job?
- Adding shadowing with a PA?
- Beginning a volunteer role at a clinic or community org?
You can add those as new entries going forward.
Programs see these updates *if they review your app after you have put in these new entries*.
💡 Translation: Your app doesn’t stop growing just because you hit submit.
✅ 2. New Test Scores (GRE, PA-CAT, etc. – if required)
If a school requires a standardized test and you retake it after submission, you can:
- Add them to your app
- Programs will see the updated scores if they review your app after you update
If your new score is higher, this can absolutely help strengthen your application.
✅ 3. New Coursework & Updated Transcripts
If you’re in progress with classes (like finishing prereqs or upper-level sciences) when you submit, you can usually:
- Update your grades once the term is complete
- Send in updated official transcripts
This can be especially helpful if:
- You want to show you can handle upper-level science courses
- You had a rough semester in the past and are now trending upward
✅ 4. Communications Outside CASPA
Even when certain CASPA fields are locked, you are not mute.
You can still update programs by:
- Sending a formal update email
- Notifying them of:
- New job or promotion
- More hours in PCE/HCE
- New certifications
- Awards, publications, significant projects
- Completed prereqs or improved grades
A few schools also have:
- Update portals
- Applicant portals
- Or very clear instructions on how (and when) they want updates
Always check each program’s website for their policy.
What You Cannot Edit (Even If You Want To)
Let’s rip off the Band-Aid. Here’s what’s stuck once you submit:
❌ 1. Personal Statement
You can’t tweak sentences, fix typos, or rewrite it later.
This is why front-loading your editing, feedback, and revisions before submission is crucial. *Get your personal statement edited – preferably your entire app edited – BEFORE you press submit to make sure it’s perfect!*
❌ 2. Experience Descriptions
You can’t go back and:
- Reword a job description
- Add more detail to an experience
- Change the way you framed a role
Those narratives are locked in place.
❌ 3. Program-Specific Materials
Anything you submitted directly for a specific program is final:
- “Why our program?” essays
- Supplemental questions
- Optional prompts
What you sent is what they have.
❌ 4. LOR Writers
Once letters are completed, you can’t:
- Swap a writer
- Delete a letter
You can add additional letters up to 5, but you can’t undo what’s already been submitted.
So… What If Something Big Changes After You Submit?
Great question.
Let’s say after submitting you:
- Get a new healthcare job
- Earn a certification (CNA, EMT, phlebotomy, etc.)
- Complete a big volunteering or leadership role
- Finish a semester with strong grades
Here’s what to do:
- Update CASPA where allowed
- Add new experiences
- Send new transcripts / scores
- Email programs directly with a brief update letter
- Keep it short
- Clearly highlight what’s new
- Connect the update back to your readiness as a PA student
- Keep a running “Master Update” document for yourself
- This helps for:
- Future cycles (if needed)
- Interviews (you’ll be asked for updates!)
- Secondaries or additional forms
- This helps for:
Strategy Tip: Use Updates to Tell a Story of Momentum
PA schools don’t just want to see a static snapshot of you.
They love seeing momentum:
- You didn’t just submit and sit back.
- You kept working.
- You stayed committed.
Updating your app (where allowed) + sending a thoughtful update to programs can send the message:
“I’m serious, I’m growing, and I’m still all-in on becoming a PA.”
When in Doubt: Check the Program’s Policy
Every PA school is a little… quirky. 😅
Some love updates.
Some don’t want any unsolicited extras.
Some have an official update form.
Always:
- Check their website
- Read their CASPA page
- Respect their instructions
If they say “no updates accepted”, don’t send them.
If they’re open to updates? Take advantage.
Final Thoughts: Your Application Doesn’t End at “Submit”
Hitting submit is huge.
You should celebrate that. 🎉
But remember:
You can still grow your hours,
add new roles,
boost your academics,
and keep schools in the loop (when appropriate).
