(And Exactly How to Do It!)
If PA school interviews had “final boss” questions, these would be them:
1️⃣ “Tell me about yourself.”
2️⃣ “Why PA?”
3️⃣ “Why our school?”
Everyone gets asked these at some point. Everyone.
And because they seem “easy,” they’re actually the ones that make or break your interview.
But don’t stress — we’re about to go through what each question really means, how to structure your answer, examples that work, and the common mistakes that quietly tank your interview.
Let’s make you the applicant they can’t stop thinking about. ☕
🩺 Question #1: “Tell me about yourself.”
(The question that sounds simple but secretly can get you a “yes, accepted” if done right.)
This is your first impression question — it’s the one that sets the tone for the entire interview. And it’s one of the best ways to highlight your strengths while sprinkling in some personality!
When interviewers say “Tell me about yourself,” they’re not asking for your entire life story or your résumé in verbal form. They’re trying to figure out:
✅ Who you are as a person, not just a student.
✅ How your story naturally leads to PA.
✅ What makes you memorable.
Think of this answer like your elevator pitch. You want the highlights — the moments that make someone want to say “wow, that’s awesome.”
💡 Structure: The “Then–Now–Next” Formula
- Then: The short version of where your interest in medicine began. A bit about your personal background.
- Now: What you’re doing currently that reinforces your passion and growth.
Example:
“Thank you for having me here today! I’m grew up in Texas and completed my undergraduate at University of Texas. There, I discovered and fell in love with the PA profession during my time in the Pre-PA Club, which I eventually served in a leadership position as Treasurer. I started my healthcare journey as an EMT, where I developed a strong foundation of patient care skills. That role taught me how to stay calm in emergencies and build trust with patients in seconds.
After a few years, I transitioned to working as an ER tech, where I had the chance to assist PAs directly. During this time I also had the opportunity to shadow multiple PAs as well as participate in significant community service with Habitat for Humanity. I also attended a medical mission trip to Peru which gave me insight into the unique needs of patients in rural and remote areas.
On my time off work from the ER, I have continued shadowing and volunteering, and for fun, I enjoy gardening.”
Tips:
- Keep it to about 60–90 seconds.
- Highlight your strengths.
- Don’t assume they’ve ever seen your app!!
💙 Question #2: “Why PA?”
(The “you’d better have a real answer” question.)
If you say “because I love helping people,” we need to talk.
Every healthcare applicant loves helping people. That’s not the differentiator — it’s the baseline.
Here’s what interviewers actually want:
👉 They want to know you understand the PA role, how it fits you personally, and that you didn’t pick it as a “shortcut.”
💡 Structure: “Head + Heart + Hands”
- Head: What you’ve learned about the role — logic and fit.
- Heart: Why it connects with your personal mission.
- Hands: What experiences proved this to you.
Example:
“For me, the PA profession combines everything I love about medicine: collaboration, flexibility, and patient education.
Working in primary care, I saw firsthand how PAs balanced autonomy with teamwork — managing complex cases but never losing that human touch. They weren’t just diagnosing; they were teaching, empowering, and bridging gaps in access.
That’s what I want — a career where I can grow clinically, serve in multiple specialties, and still focus on relationships and education. Becoming a PA feels like the perfect intersection of medical expertise and heart for service.”
Why it works: It shows you understand what PAs do, and it ties that directly to YOU and your experiences. It makes your answer genuine and authentic.
Bonus: Name a moment that sealed the deal for you — maybe a specific patient or PA who inspired you. Those little real-life details are what make you memorable.
Avoid:
- 🚫 Comparing PAs to MDs or NPs in a negative way (“I didn’t want to be a doctor because…”).
- 🚫 Talking in clichés. (“PAs have balance.” Cool, but WHY does that matter to you?)
🎯 Question #3: “Why our school?”
(The one that proves whether you actually did your homework.)
Here’s the truth: interviewers can smell a copy-paste answer from a mile away.
They want to know that you see yourself specifically at their program.
When you answer this question well, it sounds like you’re already part of the class.
💡 Structure: “Mission, Curriculum, Connection.”
- Mission: What about their values or goals speaks to you?
- Curriculum: What stands out about how they teach?
- Connection: What makes this program a personal fit?
Example:
“I’m drawn to your program because your mission to serve rural and medically underserved populations mirrors my own experience volunteering in community health clinics. I served as a MA in a rural free healthcare clinic and saw firsthand the lack of resources that these communities face. I’m passionate about using my future as a PA to help, and am eager to attend a program that emphasizes and encourages this like your mission does.
I love that your curriculum integrates early clinical exposure and small-group learning — that’s how I learn best, hands-on and collaborative.
I also noticed your partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital, where I’ve actually shadowed. Knowing I could continue serving that population during rotations makes this program feel like home.”
Extra Tip: Drop one or two specific details (rotation sites, a course, a service project, or a club). It shows you actually looked beyond the homepage.
Avoid:
- 🚫 “It’s close to my family.” (okay, but…? not a strong answer)
- 🚫 “I heard it’s a great program.” (they all are, friend).
- 🚫 Getting the program name wrong. (you’d be surprised how often this happens).
⚡ Bonus Section: How to Tie It All Together
These three answers build the foundation of your entire interview.
If you master these, everything else — ethical questions, scenarios, teamwork questions — flows naturally.
Here’s your mini practice plan:
🕐 Tonight:
- Write out your 3 answers using these structures.
- Time each one (keep them under 90 seconds).
- Record yourself talking — yes, it’s awkward, but it works.
🪞 Tomorrow:
- Re-listen and notice where you sound unsure or ramble.
- Practice those parts until it feels conversational — not memorized.
- Smile when you talk (seriously — it changes your tone instantly).
💬 Real Talk
You don’t need to be perfect.
You don’t need to sound rehearsed.
You just need to sound like you — confident, grounded, and ready.
PA schools don’t want robots; they want humans who will be great clinicians, teammates, and patient advocates.
So take a breath.
You’ve done the hard part already — getting here.
Now it’s time to show them who you are and why you belong in that seat.
