How to Prepare for MMI and Traditional PA School Interviews

So, you got the email: “We’d like to invite you to interview at our PA program.”

First, take a second to happy dance, scream into your pillow, or run around your kitchen like you’ve just won the lottery. Because getting an interview invite means you’ve already passed the first huge hurdle: your application impressed them.

Now comes the next step — proving in person (or on Zoom) that you’re exactly the kind of future PA they want in their class.

Here’s the catch: not all PA school interviews are created equal.
Some schools will put you through an MMI (Multiple Mini Interview) — a series of timed stations with different scenarios and questions.
Others will go the traditional route — think sitting down with faculty or admissions committee members for a longer, back-and-forth conversation.

And if you’re extra lucky, some schools will throw both at you. (Yay?)

The good news? You can prepare for both without losing your sanity or turning into a rehearsed robot.
Let’s break it down.

Preparing for MMI Interviews

MMIs are kind of like speed dating — but instead of deciding if you want to see someone again, the interviewers are deciding if they want to spend the next 2+ years training you to take care of patients.

You’ll rotate through stations, each with a different prompt:

  • Ethical dilemmas (“You see your classmate cheating — what do you do?”)
  • Communication challenges (“Explain how to tie a shoe to someone without using your hands.”)
  • Teamwork tasks (“Work together with a partner to solve this puzzle.”)

How to prepare:

  1. Understand the format.
Practice speaking on the spot for 5–8 minutes. Time yourself so you get used to wrapping up your thoughts without rushing or rambling.
  2. Use a framework for ethical scenarios.
For example: Identify → Consider → Decide → Justify.
    • Identify the problem.
    • Consider possible actions (and consequences).
    • Decide on the best course.
    • Justify your choice with values like patient safety, honesty, and professionalism.
  3. Practice with variety.
Don’t just prep ethics questions. Do communication, teamwork, and “random” scenarios too.
  4. Stay calm and flexible.
The MMI isn’t about getting the “right” answer — it’s about showing how you think, problem-solve, and interact under pressure.

Preparing for Traditional Interviews

Traditional interviews are… well, traditional. You’ll sit down with 1–3 interviewers and answer a mix of personal, behavioral, “why PA?” and “why our school?” type questions.

The good thing? You can go deeper in your answers and build more of a connection.
The challenge? You can also get caught off guard if you haven’t practiced enough.

How to prepare:

  1. Know your story.
Why PA? Why now? Why you? Your answers should be clear, confident, and personal (but not a full autobiography).
  2. Practice behavioral questions.
These usually start with “Tell me about a time when…” Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to keep your answers structured and impactful.
  3. Research the program.
Know at least 3 specific reasons you’re excited about that school — and make them different from what’s on the front page of their website.
  4. Prepare questions for them.
Thoughtful, genuine questions make you memorable. (And “What’s your attrition rate?” doesn’t count.)

Pro Tips for Both Interview Types

  • Don’t memorize answers word-for-word. It’ll make you sound scripted.
  • Practice out loud. Your brain and your mouth are two different things — get them on the same page.
  • Record yourself. Yes, it’s awkward. Yes, it’s worth it.
  • Be yourself, but the professional version. Think confident and friendly, not casual and sloppy.

💡 Final thought: The interview is not a test to trip you up — it’s your chance to prove you’re the kind of person they want representing their program and caring for patients.
