(Because this isn’t just about getting in—it’s about getting into the right school)
So, you’ve Googled “PA programs near me” more times than you care to admit.
You’ve scrolled through endless program websites. You’ve got a spreadsheet. Maybe three.
And yet… you’re still stuck.
How do you actually choose which PA programs to apply to?
Here’s the truth: Picking schools just based on location or name recognition is like choosing a life partner based only on their Instagram. Looks cute—but may not be the best fit.
The right PA programs for you are the ones where your stats align, your goals fit, and your future will thrive.
So before you start dropping $100+ per application like it’s nothing, ask yourself these 5 questions:
1. Do my stats match their minimum requirements?
Let’s start with the basics.
What’s your GPA? PCE hours? GRE (if required)?
Now go look at the schools on your list and see how you line up.
Not above the minimums? Sadly, that’s a hard no. You must meet the minimum prereqs or they will never see your application.
⚠️ Pro tip: “Preferred” stats matter too. Some schools technically “accept” a 3.0, but their average accepted GPA is a 3.7. If you’re way below that average, think twice before spending your money.
2. Does this program require prereqs I don’t have (and don’t want to take)?
You know what’s worse than realizing you’re missing a class?
Realizing you’re missing four, and they’re only offered in the spring, and you already submitted your application.
Every program has its own unique list of prerequisites. Some want biochem. Some demand two psych courses. Some are picky about lab credits or expiration dates.
Before you apply, make sure your coursework lines up—or that you’re 100% willing to add those classes to your schedule and your budget.
3. Does this program’s mission align with what I want to do as a PA?
Are they all about serving rural communities? Are they known for primary care? Are they focused on medically underserved populations?
Some schools heavily favor applicants who fit their mission—not just their numbers.
If a school’s values align with your goals, your personal statement and interview answers will shine.
4. Do I meet the shadowing, volunteering, or healthcare experience they’re really looking for?
Some schools list “recommended” hours. Some have “minimums.” Some are very specific about the type of experience they want.
If a program “recommends” 1,000 PCE hours but the average accepted applicant has 3,500… you’ll want to know that before applying.
5. Can I realistically see myself thriving there?
Yes, this includes location—but it also includes cost of living, support systems, clinical rotations, class size, program vibe, and overall quality of life.
- Will you be far from home, friends, or support?
- Are housing and transportation accessible?
- Does the program offer mental health resources, mentorship, or wellness initiatives?
PA school is intense. Don’t just survive—set yourself up to thrive.
